New Update: Gaile Grey's Comments
You guys are on such a Conspiracy Theory trend these days!
This was an exploit that involved armor. It was, thank goodness, reported to us, and it allowed players to get an advantage that was unintended in the game. So, we closed the exploit. That is all. We did not slip in nerfs. We did not add new features. We didn't take the opp to include a teaser for Chapter 2 or an in-game product placement for Dr. Pepper, either.

Actually, the update had a small glitch and a few new characters founds themselves running around in their skivvies. So we fixed, that, too.
Wanted to put this here in its own post so it didn't get lost in the whining shuffle.

I think the basic message is clear:
Don't panic over every update. They're on top of things.
*wonders if the ANet people know anything about the Roswell Incident and those darned black airplanes always flying overhead*

LOL happened to be doing 4v4 as this happened. Everytime one would drop armorless to go regenerate their PvP toon, a new replacement would pop in... with no armor and the cussing began anew. So update #2 rolls up and before launching figured I'd stop and see the fallout... wheee. =)

I commented in the other thread how I got queasy upon reading the Anet update page, and came here prepared for the worst. I also said that it's really a shame that so many responses like mine came up at all.
It seems to me that a good segment of the hardcore PvE crowd feels like they can't trust Anet to not mess things up, which is kinda sad. It doesn't need to be that way, but unfortunately it is - and that sentiment keeps growing.
My hope is that whatever Anet has in store to balance the PvE drop/farm/trade situation is something that reinstills our faith in Anet as a company. I remember when this game seemed to have soooo much potential - and it still does! But the positive is getting lost in the sea of negative responses to the direction PvE has been heading this last month or so. And honestly, it's Anet's fault for allowing it to get to that point.
I also mentioned in that other thread that Gaile gives me faith that Anet is going to work things out; and deep down I do feel that they care about their PvE players. But there is that little twinge of doubt after all that's happened so far... guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Gaile mentioned in a post awhile ago that the developers/programmers/coders generally can only go one direction at a time. Right now the focus seems to be on PvP. In August I can guarantee you that the focus will be PvE what with the new areas being implemented and such.
What happens is that the side being "targeted" cheers/rants/cries/dances about the changes being made. The other side sits by the sidelines rather quietly. Then the tables turn and the scenario begins again with the "opposite" side cheering/ranting/crying/dancing. It's a vicious cycle.

Well, I guess we wouldn't be on such a 'conspiracy theory trend' if only they gave out some more information.
What do you expect? How could we NOT start spreading rumours when we get something vague as 'closed equipment exploit'. Or 'fixed bugs', for example. Or 'updated area'.

Agreed.
Slightly off topic : I would like to see a mention about fixing the pet control system either in a fansite friday or offical mention. It has been posted on an uncountable number of threads here and on other comunity forums. are they actually listening to us ? they say they are but are they?
I respect that thier job is a difficult one in balancing PvP and PvE. That why I choose not to rant.... Keep the faith people!! dont get angry let humour return to Ascelon.

Or we could just slip in those updates and not say a word. I'm sure everyone is aware that in all honesty, we're not obliged to report anything. I'm pretty proud that we are, in fact, and are taking the time to make sure that we do so in six languages, too! If someone wants the development notes on every patch, well, unfortunately we're not going to be able to provide those. If we close an exploit and you wonder "Does it affect me?" then maybe we all ought to step back and take another look at you, huh?
We post honestly about updates, but details are not provided for a wealth of reasons. It would be super if, instead of our seeing the glass has half empty, we all saw it as half full. This is the first company I know of that is so studious about trying to outline every area in which updates or patches are made, and to call out the specifics of what is being altered. I've seen games that have been out a year that don't have a single "patch note" page.
So, in short, we're reporting what we can, and when we can, and will attempt to do that into the future as well.

It's a vicious cycle, and it's sort of sad, because we really do have a plan in mind, and a sure and certain path we're going to follow. I am afraid that at a certain point, a few players thought "He who shouts loudest will get the most attention."
If we ever gave the impression that the complainers were the only ones getting served, trust me, that's not the case. We don't get intimidated, and we don't pander.

What is this 'advantage' you mention? I'd really like to know what's being updated. Maybe it concerns me, maybe it doesn't .. but if such information is not being handed out, I'll never know!

Touché had a laugh at that one.... Is anthing being considered about a pet control system? From reading these comunity forums it seems that people would like a number of things to change but this one always seems to appear ...
people want an attack this target... and
come back to me fluffy?
Is this going to be implemented.
BTW I'm loving the update system... (56k user)

whoa... now i've never used a real "exploit" in the game, and that's not what made me queasy. My farming history is about three episodes in the DC>Beetletun run, and going after some collector's items with henchies in the south shiverpeaks area; and I've had one character rushed to Droknar's to get armor and then go back to normal questing. So normally I wouldn't have any reason to be worried, and wouldn't even care. But that's kinda my point... it made me feel anxious anyway - not because of what it said, but solely because of experiences with the last few updates and the nerf bat. An accurate predictor of future performance is usually based on past experiences.

I'd never really thought otherwise... but I did get the impression that Anet wanted to hear what the community thought and gauge the response. Certainly, it's not a good idea to pander to a very loud, yet minor segment. But where does one discern the difference between whining and genuine concerns that are being expressed with conviction. In these forus, there's so much junk thrown around that genuine concerns by well-intentioned players can get buried in a mess of noise, or blown off as just complaining.
I love this game. That's why I bother to say anything at all. There are those who see the glass half empty by their very nature... I'm not one of those people. Admittedly, things get blown out of proportion on the forums here, and can seem more important than they really are. However, there has honestly been a few times now in PvE that the next time I logged on after an update, I was really disappointed - but posted here, got over it and kept going forward. That's the honest truth. Take it or leave it, I guess.
Double post content:
And Gaile, I sincerely apologize if any of my responses to your posts have caused you any upset. I don't know if they have, but if so that was never my intention. Your participation here has always been deeply appreciated by me, as has your patience and good humour. Maybe we should all express that to you more often, as I know many others feel the same that I do. And you're right... I'll do my best to maintain the "glass half full" mentality, and try to take things said around here with a grain of salt more often.
I just really love the PvE aspect of this game, you know?

It was an example. I don't mean 'does the exploit affect me'? If it does, it's time to become suspicious. I meant it like 'Does this update affect me?' Like the PvP'ers were seriously affected by the no-armor bug .. it wasn't mentioned and it affected them in a serious way.
Now, once again, that's an example, and maybe a bad one, but I use it to make my point clear. This time it was a glitch .. if it was a REAL update (an intended update) and it was mentioned ...
Edit: Attempt to think of a(n) (good) example: Imagine an update restricted use of Droknar's Forge armor to characters that did not ascend, and this wasn't mentioned. I would hate it if I got there after being run to Droknar's only to find out I can't even wear the armor. If it was mentioned, I wouldn't even have bothered to pay money to get there.

I'm not demanding information on updates, but it sure would be handy. It will at least stop us gossiping / spreading rumours like an old lady... to a certain extend. You know human nature
